Do you have skills and experience that you want to use in a meaningful way?
Do you want to ‘give back’ to your community and help people in need?
Do you want to meet interesting people? Are you interested in people’s stories? Oral or written histories?
Are you interested in what we can learn from our elders?
- Would you like to learn new and challenging skills within a supported team?
The Biography Program supports volunteers to engage in work that is highly rewarding, meaningful, productive and fun, and that promotes a shared sense of community belonging and connection.
“My life has been indelibly enriched by this work”
“Opening the door on the lives of those I would never have known. What a privilege!”
“Sharing extraordinary stories, the intimacies, sadness, pride, laughter of people’s journeys. It is fascinating and such a privilege”
The Biography Program offers free comprehensive training to volunteers preparing them in their new role. During training, volunteers have a chance to further develop their skills around communication, listening, knowledge of aged care, technical transcribing & editing support, the biography process and self-care.
Volunteer biography involves listening, listening and listening.
While the simple act of listening and recording a life story is in itself the privilege, we know that biographers can often work in sensitive and emotionally demanding situations where boundaries need to be clear and self-care is paramount. This is why all trained volunteers receive ongoing support from a professional Volunteer Coordinator. It is the Volunteer Coordinator’s job to manage referrals from the aged care team, formally liaise with them around the management of each client’s biography, and to support the work and well-being of volunteers.
Next intake of volunteer biographers to be announced. This is dependent on obtaining vital funds to support volunteer training and supervision. Note – acceptance into the program is subject to a screening interview, reference and police check.
Basic requirements are time flexibility during the week, your own car and computer, and a willingness to learn. More info is on our flyer
